La 10ª edición de Bioestadística: Una base para el análisis en ciencias de la salud, debería atraer a la misma audiencia para la que se escribieron las primeras nueve ediciones: estudiantes universitarios avanzados, estudiantes graduados principiantes y profesionales de la salud que necesitan un libro de referencia sobre metodología estadística.

Al igual que sus predecesores, esta edición requiere pocos requisitos previos matemáticos. Solo se requiere un dominio razonable del álgebra para comprender los conceptos y métodos que subyacen a los cálculos. El énfasis continúa estando en una comprensión intuitiva de los principios en lugar de una comprensión basada en la sofisticación matemática.

Esta edición hace un mayor énfasis en las aplicaciones de cómputo. Considero que las computadoras, al igual que las calculadoras manuales, son sólo una herramienta que se utiliza para facilitar el trabajo del estudiante y de quien se dedica a la estadística. Creo que un libro de texto como éste no debería limitarse exclusivamente a un lenguaje particular o a un conjunto de programas. Por lo tanto, mis observaciones respecto a las computadoras se han expresado en términos generales, lo cual permite que cada uno de los instructores de la materia tenga mayor flexibilidad para integrar el texto con las ventajas que ofrecen las computadoras. Muchos de los ejercicios abarcan datos “en bruto”, los cuales proporcionarán datos realistas para las aplicaciones de computadora.

Para la mayoría de las técnicas estadísticas cubiertas en esta edición, analizamos las capacidades de uno o más paquetes de software (MINITAB, SAS, SPSS y NCSS) que pueden usarse para realizar los cálculos necesarios para su aplicación. También se muestran las pantallas de visualización resultantes.
